Johnny Tweenies, a
newspaper columnist for New York's struggling Sun-Telegram talks and dresses like someone
from the flapper era.
In his snappy three- piece suit and fedora Johnny's like Humphrey Bogart trapped in
the body of Pee-Wee Herman. His girlfriend Samantha runs a modern art gallery with her gay
best friend, who supplies the requisite bitchy bon-mots when Johnny does such things as
send a telegram rather than an e-mail. She loves his anachronistic zip, but can't
understand why she hasn't gotten further than first base in the entire time they've known
each other. "Are you gay?" she finally blurts out. "Yes, of course."
Johnny replies, "merry and gay. But enough about me, my darling... "
Meanwhile Johnny and his genuinely "merry" photographer partner, Anthony
Rapp (Dazed and Confused) have stumbled headlong into genuine trouble - the clutches of
New York's most elusive drug-lord. As he tells one of the thugs with typical crisp aplomb:
"Buddy, you keep on ridin' me like this, and you're gonna have to pay the fare."
In this context, Johnny can be seen as a metaphor for "Man of the
Century" itself. After all, what could be more out of place among the |
grim portraits of heroin
addicts and child molesters in today's independent film scene than a cheerful screwball
comedy that
aims only to entertain and triumphs through sheer goofy charm?
A marvelously strange little gem.
