| I absolutely love gay men! Heck! I love
'em so much, I even married one. And a good one at that! I picked him up in a bar in a
small midwestern city. We knew each other for less than a year and of all the gay boys I
met, he was the one who had the right attitude. You see, I was being stationed to Hawaii
and didn't know a soul. I knew if I got married I could bring my "husband," live
off base and be able to keep my cat! My priorities were well intact. I wasn't quite sure how I would break the news to my parents, however. They
knew that their daughter is a lesbian, how will they take it that I am now married to a
gay man, at that. I needed to break the news to them strategically... My sister was
getting married that same year and I didn't want to take away her glory, since hers was
legit.
I decided to write my parents and describe in a letter all the
details. It started out something like this, "I have something to tell you and I
don't know how to start." I am positive after reading that statement that they both
immediately sat down to finish reading the rest. So when they finally get to the part
where I married a gay boy out of convenience (my lover and my new husband's boyfriend as
witnesses to boot!), you could just imagine their relief! "Oh is that it?" My
mother declared! You nearly gave us a heart attack, thought you were arrested or God knows
what!! They were very proud of me.
One boyfriend even put me up in a one-room rental with him, when I
came to visit at Cherry Grove on Fire Island one weekend. I immediately found a job there
and stayed with him all summer! It was close quarters, so we had to coordinate times for
private use of the room, naturally. We are still sisters to this day.
Gay men are such a necessity in this world! Fashion would be a mess
without them. There wouldn't be any good hairstylists, anywhere! And they always look so
fresh!
Oh, I know the world thinks lesbians hate all men and all gay men
hate women, especially lesbians! But it's simply not true. I love my boys! They have been
behind me for years. Listening to my dyke drama and giving me a "You Go Girl"
here and there when needed.
If it weren't for gay men, I would've never dyed my hair purple or
have gotten a crew cut! They are my inspiration; it's their free nature and confidence
that simply refuse to wane with age. I love that there are gay men in the world; it is
because of them that I will always feel protected. -ib |
